How to play Andar Bahar: a clear guide from first round to steady habits

Table setup, step-by-step flow, odds, side bets, and mistakes that empty a wallet in half an hour.

Andar Bahar is one of those games that shows up at weddings, clubs, and now phone screens for the same reason: a round can finish before your chai cools. You are not building a 13-card rummy layout. You pick a side, cards fall, and one side hits the joker rank first.

In India the name is literal — andar (inside) and bahar (outside). Online lobbies on Teen Patti Master keep that structure, just with faster dealing and optional side bets. The game is easy to learn and just as easy to overplay if you treat short streaks as “due” outcomes.

Table setup: Joker, Andar, Bahar

Before stakes matter, learn the three labels on the felt:

  • Joker (middle card): One card is placed face up in the centre. Its rank is the target — suits usually do not matter for the main bet. The round ends when that rank appears again on Andar or Bahar.
  • Andar: The “inside” pile. Cards are dealt to this side in turn.
  • Bahar: The “outside” pile. Cards alternate with Andar until a match to the joker rank shows up.

You are betting on which side will show the matching rank first — not on building a poker hand.

Step-by-step: one full round

  1. Join a table and check the stake limits. Online rooms often finish a round in well under a minute.
  2. Joker is revealed in the centre (or dealt according to the room’s animation).
  3. Place your main bet on Andar or Bahar before dealing continues (timing windows are short — decide before the clock runs out).
  4. Optional side bets, if the table offers them, are placed in the same window when available.
  5. Cards are dealt alternately to Andar and Bahar.
  6. First side to receive a card matching the joker’s rank wins the main bet. Payouts settle; the next round starts.

That is the whole main game. No drawing for a second chance inside the same round. When your side hits, you win that bet; when the other side hits, that bet is lost.

Odds and side bets

Main Andar / Bahar bet

In classic presentations, Andar and Bahar are close to even money, sometimes with a slight house edge baked into which side is favoured on the opening deal or in the published paytable. Always read the paytable on the specific Teen Patti Master room — operators can show 1:1 on one side and a different rate on the other, or charge a small commission style edge.

There is no skill edge in “reading” pure randomness across a few rounds. Position preference is mostly habit, not math you can force.

Popular side bets (when offered)

Side markets vary by table. Common styles include:

  • First-card side: predicting something about the first card dealt after the joker.
  • Card count / range: guessing whether the match appears within a range of cards (for example within the first few deals vs later). Longer ranges usually pay less; short “quick hit” ranges pay more when they hit because they are rarer.
  • Colour or suit props: less common, higher variance.

Side bets often carry a higher house edge than the main side. Treat them as optional entertainment, not a recovery plan after a lost main bet.

Practical tips (and myths to drop)

The gambler’s fallacy

Five Bahar wins in a row does not make Andar “due.” Each round’s shuffle is independent. Chasing the opposite side because of a streak is how sessions blow up in half an hour of 30-second rounds.

Bankroll for fast games

Speed multiplies mistakes. If a Teen Patti session might be 20 hands an hour, Andar Bahar can burn through far more decisions in the same time. Set a loss limit in rupees and a round count before you sit. When either hits, leave the room — not after “one more.”

Stake size

Keep the main bet small relative to your total wallet. Side bets, if any, should be smaller still. Doubling after every loss (Martingale-style) fails when a streak longer than your balance appears — and short-round games produce those streaks often enough.

Don’t chase losses

A lost round is over. Raising the next bet only to “get even” turns one bad minute into a bad evening. If you feel urgency, take a break or switch to a slower game like classic Teen Patti on a low table.

Read the room paytable once

Before the first chip goes in, open the info/paytable icon. Note main-bet payout and any side-bet rules. That 20 seconds saves arguments with yourself later.

Try it on Teen Patti Master

If you already play 3 Patti on your phone, Andar Bahar is the quick-round option in the same lobby family. Download the official Teen Patti Master APK, use a stake you will not miss, and treat the first sessions as practice for pacing — not a plan to recover last week’s bills.

18+ only. Real-money play is restricted in some regions; check local rules and stop when the budget you set is gone.
